The Spirit of Giving: Toys for Tots with the Marines

Aired November 11th 2024

Toys for Tots, a program initiated by the Marines 77 years ago in California, has grown into a nationwide campaign aimed at bringing joy to underprivileged children during the holiday season. This year alone, the campaign is running 870 local drives to ensure children across the nation experience the joy of Christmas. Marine Sergeant Samuel Lewis and Sergeant Daniel Manzanares, alongside veteran organizer Mike Binks, are deeply involved in the local efforts to distribute toys and bring holiday cheer.

The program does more than distribute toys; it actively engages with the community through various outreach activities. "We try to help out by volunteering at local food pantries and shelters that serve people in need," explains Sgt. Manzanares. The aim is not only to deliver toys but also to foster a stronger community spirit and extend support wherever possible.

Local citizens can contribute to the Toys for Tots initiative by donating at designated drop-off points detailed on their website, HudsonValleyToysForTots.org, or participating in on-site events organized throughout the holiday season. "It's about spreading the love a little bit," Sgt. Lewis adds, emphasizing the broader impact of each donation.

For those interested in supporting the initiative, Randy Turner, a longtime supporter of Toys for Tots, highlights the importance of donations, "If you haven't adopted one charity-based community organization to support this year, maybe this year you can make it Toys for Tots." He points out the crucial need for toys suitable for children on the fringes of the age groups, particularly those aged zero to two and nine to fifteen.

Toys for Tots continues to make a significant difference in the lives of children and families. Through the efforts of dedicated individuals like Sgt. Lewis, Sgt. Manzanares, and volunteers like Randy Turner, the program not only delivers toys but also a message of hope and community support during the festive season.
