Hudson Valley Highlights: Feeding Hope and Humanity

Aired November 17th 2024

The Regional Food Bank in Hudson Valley plays a crucial role in combating food insecurity, which affects 11% of the area's population. Leaders like Barry Lewis and Felicia Kaelin are at the forefront of these efforts, emphasizing the importance of both immediate relief and educational programs.

Barry Lewis explained the breadth of the challenge: "The need has become even greater since the pandemic," highlighting the stark increase in food insecurity, with 155,000 more people affected post-pandemic. The food bank not only distributes millions of pounds of food but also aims to provide nutritious options, such as fresh fruits and vegetables sourced from local farms.

Felicia Kaelin, delving into the operations, shared that "Much of our food provided is fresh... we pride ourselves in saying that." This approach ensures that aid is not just filling bellies but nourishing bodies. The food bank's reach extends through partnerships with over a thousand agencies, indicating a robust network that spans six counties in the Hudson Valley.

Despite their extensive efforts, the challenge of stigma remains, especially among sensitive demographics like students and seniors, who often have to choose between food and other essentials like medication. Innovative solutions such as discreet backpack programs in schools are part of their strategy to ensure dignity and privacy for beneficiaries.

The Regional Food Bank's ongoing mission is supported by a wide array of community efforts and volunteers, including Rotary Clubs and local businesses, which help amplify their impact. As the economic landscape remains uncertain, the dedication of teams led by individuals like Barry and Felicia is more crucial than ever, ensuring that no one in the Hudson Valley has to face hunger alone.
