Rotary's Impact in Ukraine

Aired February 18th, 2024

In an inspiring testament to global solidarity, BJ Mikkelson, a dedicated Rotarian, spearheaded crucial humanitarian efforts in response to the Ukrainian crisis following the 2022 invasion. BJ's journey began with a spontaneous fundraising initiative that garnered $2,500, leading him to Berlin. There, he witnessed the overwhelming influx of refugees arriving by train, prompting a swift reallocation of resources to address their immediate needs, such as food and medical supplies.

Rotary International's extensive network played a pivotal role, collaborating across borders to provide relief. BJ's initiatives expanded rapidly, with donations swelling to $28,000 by mid-year, underpinning a broader outreach that included essential supplies distribution and support across Europe. His story reflects the profound impact of grassroots mobilization in times of crisis, illustrating how compassion, quick action, and community support can significantly alleviate suffering in dire circumstances.

BJ's reflection on the experience encapsulates the essence of the mission: "Despite my face, people are giving me money for this mission," and "It might have seemed disorganized, which is hard to believe in Germany, but disorganized at the train station. However, things really worked and people were being, I hate to use the word, but being distributed, if you will, throughout Europe from Berlin." His efforts exemplify how individual initiative, backed by a global community like Rotary, can create waves of positive change in response to humanitarian disasters.
