Raising Awareness of Youth Addiction

Aired February 11th 2024

Mike Ballas serves as the agency director for the Council on Addiction Prevention and Education (CAPE), an influential organization based in Dutchess County, focused on combatting substance use. CAPE's mission is multifaceted, encompassing prevention, education, and recovery support within the community. The organization embeds prevention counselors in local schools and employs peer advocates to provide recovery support, reflecting a holistic approach to addiction prevention.

Ballas explains, "Our team is deeply embedded in the community, offering direct support to those in recovery and educational programs aimed at preventing the onset of substance use." He highlights the importance of these initiatives, stating, "Engaging with individuals early on is crucial, as prevention is significantly less costly—both financially and emotionally—than the process of recovery from addiction."

CAPE's programs are designed to be accessible to all, removing financial barriers to ensure that everyone in need can benefit. "All of our services are free to the public," Ballas adds, underscoring the organization’s commitment to community health. This approach ensures that individuals and families facing financial challenges can still access vital support and resources without the burden of additional stress.

By prioritizing early intervention and support, CAPE not only helps individuals avoid the pitfalls of addiction but also mitigates the broader social and economic impacts associated with substance abuse disorders. This proactive strategy is essential in building a healthier community and offering a pathway to recovery and well-being for those affected.
