Empowerment Through Understanding: The Greystone Approach

Aired September 22, 2024

Greystone Programs is a vital non-profit organization based in Hudson Valley, New York, dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism and other intellectual disabilities. Anquinette Hayles, a passionate advocate and member of the Greystone team, plays a key role in the organization's outreach and development efforts. Through her work, Greystone Programs supports over 650 families, providing a variety of services that allow individuals to lead fulfilling lives in a community setting rather than institutional environments.

Anquinette emphasizes that autism should not be seen merely as a disability but as a different ability, stating, "We don't see it as a shortcoming, but we see it as an exceptional ability that they are born with." Greystone Programs has grown significantly from its beginnings, now operating 17 homes in various locations and offering tailored environments that respect individual preferences, down to the color of their room.

Greystone's comprehensive services extend beyond residential care. They offer behavioral therapy, day programs, after-school programs, and holiday break programs, which cater to the unique needs of those with developmental disabilities. Their commitment to personalization and community integration is a testament to their philosophy that everyone should lead the life they choose.
