Building Aquatic Awareness: Swim Strong for All

Aired September 15, 2024

The Swim Strong Foundation, led by Rotarian Sean Slevin, is a nonprofit organization based in New York City with a global outreach, aiming to drastically reduce unintended drowning and water-related accidents. Their mission encompasses three core areas: providing essential swimming skills, educating on environmental water safety, and advocating for legislative support to foster an aquatic culture.

Sean Slevin, a dedicated advocate with profound expertise in water safety, spearheads initiatives that have profoundly impacted thousands. The foundation has provided over $1,700,000 in free swimming lessons, benefiting more than 10,900 individuals who might not otherwise afford such crucial training.

Beyond physical swimming skills, Swim Strong is committed to "know before you go" education. This program has reached about 55,000 students, focusing on situational water safety awareness from an environmental and climate perspective, rather than purely recreational. This initiative encourages a broader understanding of water safety, integrating knowledge about environmental factors that influence water conditions.

Slevin's passion also extends to infrastructure improvements and educational reforms. He has been instrumental in pushing for more accessible swimming facilities across New York State and integrating water safety into school curriculums. His efforts align with governmental movements like Governor Hochul's New York Swim's Initiative, illustrating a proactive approach to building safer aquatic environments.

Swim Strong's comprehensive strategy also includes lobbying for legislation that supports their mission, emphasizing that understanding and preparing for the environmental aspects of water safety are as crucial as learning to swim.

Through community involvement and education, the Swim Strong Foundation continues to make significant strides toward a safer future for all. Their programs not only teach swimming but also instill a respect and understanding of water in all its forms, aiming to prevent the tragic losses that occur too frequently in aquatic environments.
