Angels of Light, a beacon of hope in the Hudson Valley, has been quietly transforming the lives of families dealing with serious illnesses and tragic circumstances for over two decades. Founded by Lori Decker during a holiday season, the organization began as a simple act of kindness to a family in need and has since expanded to assist over 120 families annually across 11 counties.
The initiative started when Lori, touched by the struggles of a young girl undergoing cancer treatment, decided to alleviate the family's holiday stresses by taking over the responsibilities of gift shopping and wrapping. This small gesture of support has grown into a full-fledged nonprofit organization, officially becoming a 501(c)(3) in April 2016. "We had no idea there was such a need," Lori shares, reflecting on the organization's growth fueled by community support and the realization of the ongoing challenges these families face daily, not just during the holidays.
Angels of Light goes beyond seasonal giving. They provide year-round support, including financial assistance for necessities like rent, medical bills, and even lodging when treatments require travel. "So the child is doing treatment, let's say in Boston, we help provide a place to stay if they can't get into Ronald McDonald House," Lori explains, emphasizing the practical aspects of their assistance.
The organization's impact is felt deeply in the community, with many stepping forward to donate or volunteer. "It's more of a gift for me to be able to give than anything else," says Lori, capturing the spirit of generosity that drives Angels of Light. This sentiment is echoed by Danielle Malika, who has been with the organization since its inception, inspired by Lori's example and her own personal losses.
Their website, angelsoflighthv.org, offers a gateway for those in need to apply for assistance and for benefactors to contribute to their mission. It details their programs, from holiday gift-giving to helping with everyday expenses that can overwhelm a family grappling with illness or loss.
The true essence of Angels of Light lies in its community-centric approach, mobilizing local resources and goodwill to ensure that no family has to face their darkest times alone. Whether it's through holiday cheer or addressing the harsh realities of illness and loss, Angels of Light stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring impact of kindness.
