Dive Heart: Changing Lives Through the Power of Scuba Diving

Aired January 12, 2025

Dive Heart, a remarkable 24-year-old nonprofit organization, is revolutionizing the way we think about disabilities and abilities. Founded by Jim Elliott, Dive Heart aims to build confidence, independence, and self-esteem in individuals with both physical and cognitive disabilities through the liberating experience of scuba diving.

Jim Elliott shares that the organization operates with the understanding that scuba diving can serve as a powerful tool for therapy and empowerment. He remarked, “The thrill really for me doing this now for it'll be 28 years is to get somebody out of a wheelchair and get them standing up in the deep part of a pool.” This moment of independence and the chance to self-identify as divers rather than being defined by their disabilities is what makes Dive Heart's work truly transformative.

The program is accessible to individuals aged ten and upwards, offering them a chance to escape gravity and enjoy the freedom that the underwater world offers. Prospective participants are first invited to a pool program to experience the joy of becoming buoyant and learning to manage scuba gear under the guidance of trained instructors.

Tina Marie Hernandez, who was inspired to join the Dive Heart journey after meeting Jim at an alumni event, underscores the importance of community and global reach in the organization’s efforts. Dive Heart has established teams across the United States and even internationally, with presence in Malaysia, Borneo, the UK, and resorts across the Caribbean. “Every drop makes a difference,” reflects Tina Marie, illustrating the far-reaching impact of their efforts.

One of the most ambitious projects on the horizon is the development of a multi-tiered mega pool in the United States, poised to be the deepest pool in North America. This facility will not only cater to therapeutic diving but also advance research and training opportunities. The design, which has already secured three patents, aims to create a controlled environment for rehabilitation and a haven for people to experience the unique benefits of scuba diving.

Dive Heart’s work extends beyond borders, involving and collaborating with global Rotary Clubs to ensure their initiatives receive community support wherever they venture. As Jim Elliott explains, “Before we go to places, we work with Rotary clubs to set up meetings, aiming to establish community service.”
