As the Red Hook Rotary Club celebrates its 70th anniversary, members are taking a moment to highlight the club's efforts in community service, both past and present. Established in 1955 as a branch of the Rhinebeck Rotary Club, Red Hook Rotary has a rich history of fostering goodwill and service, aligning with the larger goals of Rotary International. Today, the club continues to serve the Red Hook community through various initiatives, including the launch of a unique community cookbook.
The Red Hook Rotary Club has been instrumental in various community projects over the years. From building playgrounds and benches at local recreation parks to hosting the annual Apple Blossom Day, the club has made significant contributions to communal life in Red Hook. The Apple Blossom Day event, which features a variety of community booths and entertainment, is a staple of the club's calendar and will take place on May 10th this year.
One of the most exciting initiatives for the club's 70th year is the development of a community cookbook. Spearheaded by Rebecca Kent, the club's treasurer, this cookbook aims to bring together community members through their shared love of food. “There's nothing like bringing the community together than food,” Rebecca said. The cookbook will feature recipes from anyone connected to the Red Hook community, from longtime residents to recent visitors.
Local residents and those with connections to the Red Hook area are invited to submit their favorite recipes. Submissions can include a personal note or anecdote, adding a special touch to each contribution. The goal is not just to share recipes, but to share stories and strengthen community ties. Instructions and forms for submitting recipes can be found on the club's website: redhookrotaryclub.org.
In addition to the cookbook, the Red Hook Rotary Club is hosting a cocktail party to further celebrate its 70th anniversary. Details about upcoming events, including the cocktail party, can also be found on their website.
Jonah Triebwasser, a club member for 20 years, reflected on the club's achievements and changes over time. Notably, the inclusion of women in Rotary clubs since 1988 has been a significant transformation. Carl Dowden, who has been a Rotarian for 45 years, noted, “The addition of women to the clubs has improved the organization a lot. You get things done now.” Dave Wright, another long-standing member, emphasized the impact of Rotary’s international projects and the emotional fulfillment of contributing to community well-being through various initiatives.
The club also prides itself on its active youth exchange program, which offers students the opportunity to experience different cultures firsthand. This esteemed program, managed by Dave Wright, has been running for over 40 years, hosting students from countries all over the world and sending local students abroad.
For those interested in joining the Red Hook Rotary Club, the mission of "Service Above Self" offers rewarding opportunities to make a positive impact both locally and globally. Membership information is available on rotary.org.
As the Red Hook Rotary Club celebrates its milestone anniversary, it continues to build on its legacy of service, community engagement, and international friendship, encouraging both participation and contributions from all corners of the Red Hook community.
