As the vibrant green of March beckons us closer to festivities, the Dutchess County St. Patrick's Day Parade in Wappingers Falls provides the perfect opportunity to get into the spirit early. This beloved annual event, taking place this year on March 1st, is set to delight and entertain people of all ages with its parade of resplendent floats, lively marching bands, and diverse groups from the community.
Chairing the event is Gene Noone, who, along with his dedicated team, ensures that the parade runs smoothly year after year. "This will be our 30th year, and we have it on the first Saturday of every March," shares Noone, emphasizing the strategic scheduling that draws premier bands and performers. Underlining the commitment, Noon reveals, "It costs us almost $30,000 to put this on," a cost that is primarily covered by the parade’s commemorative journal and the tremendous efforts of dedicated volunteers and sponsors.
Another key player is Rotarian Todd Bowen, from the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls, who actively involves the Club’s Interact students. Bowen describes the student's role enthusiastically, stating, "Our Interact Club helps with lineup, so I print out the lineup sheets for them and they're… in charge of… lineup and making sure that everyone's in the right place."
Alongside the parade, the morning will commence with a mass at 9:00 AM at St. Mary’s in Wappingers Falls, followed by a community breakfast. The parade steps off at 1:00 PM and snakes through the town, offering an awe-inspiring tapestry of community spirit and Irish heritage.
Those interested in participating, from marching in the parade to sponsorship, should visit the website at dc sppc.org for more details. Groups can register to march, and businesses can explore advertising opportunities in the parade’s commemorative journal.
This celebration is not merely an Irish affair; as Noone fondly states, "On St. Patrick's Day, everybody's Irish." This inclusivity is reflected in the variety of participants, from boy scouts to local fire departments and even a group dedicated to dog adoption.
Whether you’re a resident or a visitor to Dutchess County, this event is sure to spread joy and encapsulate the essence of community celebration. Put on your green and join in the festivities, because as Noone perfectly puts it, “Rain shines snow, we march.”
