In 1992, Rotary International initiated a remarkable project known as Aquabox. Born from the inventive mind of a Rotarian in the northeast of England, this initiative focuses on delivering clean drinking water and essential supplies to disaster-stricken areas worldwide.
Aquabox has since evolved into a vital resource for disaster response, containing not only a sophisticated water filtration system but also various humanitarian aid items. The box includes essential tools for shelter and cooking, personal hygiene products, and a hand-operated torch—essentials that are often lost in the chaos of a natural disaster or conflict.
The centerpiece of Aquabox is its innovative filter, designed to purify contaminated water without the need for chemicals or external power sources. It operates simply with a hand pump, resembling a large bicycle pump, which makes it exceptionally practical in areas without electricity.
Cheryl Berry and Roger Cassidy, prominent figures in the Aquabox project, shed light on its operations and impact. "In the box is the very important Aquabox filter which is the key really to the clean drinking water," explains Cheryl Berry. This filter can produce clean water at a rate of one liter per minute, making it a critical tool in emergency situations.
Roger Cassidy highlights the broad reach of Aquabox, "We've actually provided billions of gallons of water for people wherever they may be." With filters distributed in over 62 countries, the initiative has been instrumental in providing relief following hurricanes, earthquakes, and other disasters.
The organization's efforts are supported by a robust volunteer network, which assembles and packs these boxes in the UK. However, the ambition of Aquabox extends beyond current operations, as they plan to establish strategic reserves of boxes in disaster-prone regions to facilitate even faster responses.

Their work not only underscores the critical importance of clean drinking water but also exemplifies the Rotary motto of service above self, making a tangible difference in the lives of millions.
